Coriander

Description:

Coriander, like cumin, is the seed of parsley family. The seed is globular and almost round, brown to yellow red, and 1/5 inch in diameter with alternating straight and wavy ridges. Coriander has a mild, distinctive taste similar to a blend of lemon and sage.

Types:

Coriander is classified as below:-

  1. According to origin:

    • Of Madhya Pradesh origin
    • Of Gujarat / Rajasthan origin

  2. According to treatment received:

    • Sulphur treated (P.G.P. washed)
    • Normal

  3. According to colour:

    • Eagle quality (light greenish to brown)
    • Scooter quality (70 to 80% green)
    • Single parrot (95 to 97% green)
    • Double parrot (99 to 99.99% green)
    • Kachi Keri ( Brownish yellow in colour)

Another popular form of coriander seeds is coriander splits. Coriander splits, technically speaking, is the residue of major coriander processing. Hence, it proves to be a cheap substitute for coriander itself.

Coriander is also commonly exported in the form of a powder.

Packing:

Coriander seeds are mostly packed in 15 kg or 20 kg or 40 kg gross packing jute bags. Coriander splits on the other hand are packed in 33 or 34 kg (gross) jute bags, or as per the buyers' requirement.

Volume:

Coriander is shipped in both 20 ft. and 40 ft. container loads.
The approximate volume of a 20 ft. F.C.L. of coriander would be around 9.00 M. tons and that of a 40 ft. F.C.L. would be 22 M. tons.

Coriander powder is shipped in 20 ft. F.C.L.'s the total volume being 18 metric tons.

Precautions:

Use with restraint in cooking as its strong flavour may exclude other flavours. It is advisable to store in airtight containers to preserve aroma.
