Asafoetida

Description:

Asafoetida is the dried latex (gum oleo-resin) exuded from the living underground rhizome or tap root. Asafoetida is acrid and bitter in taste and emits a strong disagreeable pungent odour due to the presence of sulphur compounds.

Types:

Asafoetida is generally shipped in 2 forms:

  1. As lumps: which is the compressed form of asafoetida.

  2. As a powder: which is derived by further processing of asafoetida lumps.

Packing:

Packing in asafoetida varies according to brands requested by the buyer.
Major brands include L.G., Vandevi, Annamani etc.

All markings as per buyer specifications.

Volume:

A standard 20 ft. F.C.L. carries approximately 15 metric tons of lumps and 8 metric tons of powder.

Precautions:

It is vital to keep asafoetida in airtight containers as its sulphurous odour will effect other foods and spices. This is a very powerful spice and even in its ground state lasts well over a year if stored properly, away from light and air.
